Here is an explanation of what you might expect from a hands on Reiki treatment. First degree Practitioners do hands on work.  Second and third degree practitioners can also use remote, hands off techniques. 

The practitioner will probably ask you some questions about your reasons for seeking a Reiki treatment and explain a little about the process.  You will probably be asked to remove your shoes and should be dressed comfortably in clothes that will not bind or constrict you in any way. You may be asked to remove shoes,  jewelry and eyeglasses.  Other than that you will remain fully clothed for the entire treatment. 
The Reiki Practitioner will probably ask you to lie down on a massage table if one is available or on some other comfortable surface. Treatments can be done seated if there is no place to lay down.


The practitioner may begin the treatment with some form of a clearing ritual or prayer and affirmation that the energies are invoked for the highest good . They may call on angels or guides to help or they may not, depending on their and your personal inclination and intuition. this is not a requirement, Reiki is not religious in nature.

    A treatment usually lasts From forty to ninety minutes.  Shorter treatments are also common. When a Reiki practitioner places his or her hands on a person, the touch is light, there is no pressure. Reiki is not a massage, The practitioner will just rest their hands in the various positions and run the Reiki energy. Reiki will also work if the hands are held a few inches above the body, actual contact is not absolutely necessary even with a first degree Reiki practitioner.  

    The practitioner usually places both hands  slightly cupped with the fingers and thumbs held together similar to the way hands are held when swimming   on different locations on the body, usually beginning at the head. or with the hands placed over the face. The Reiki energy usually  flows into the crown of the practitioners head and flows out through the hands to treat you. The Reiki practitioner treats you by putting their hands into your aura and on your body.


    You may feel tingling in your body or the flow of Reiki through your body the practitioners hands may feel exceptionally warm to you you may see colors or you may not feel any thing extraordinary at all, you may even fall asleep during the treatment.

    Each position is held for about two to five minutes or until the practitioner feels the energy taper off if they do feel the energy. Reiki works whether or not it can be felt. Reiki does not require any manipulation of tissue or muscles so the hands remain still. Reiki will even flow through a plaster cast or across the world for that matter.


    It is common for the person being treated to experience sensations such as heat or pulsing energy flowing from the practitioner's hands. Some people see lights or feel changes in their body, but not everyone does.      Most people report deep state of relaxation and a feeling of well being. Many people report feeling both relaxed and energized and that they feel very rested.


Regular use of Reiki leads to an increase in general vitality and well being and a sense of inner peace. It accelerates and promotes the healing process is capable of improving the quality of one's life to an amazing degree. Naturally if you have a specific area of concern regarding your health you should consult a traditional Medical practitioner Reiki is a wonderful addition to conventional treatment but should not be used in place of it.

    After the Treatment the practitioner will probably leave you to rest for a few minutes until you are ready to get up. You should drink plenty of water after a Reiki treatment in order to help flush out any toxins that have been released by the Reiki energies. Energy treatment can produce changes and emotional processing  Sometimes ,due to the release of toxins and energetic blocks a recipient will briefly feel worse after a treatment rather than better This is a rare side effect if it does occur you should contact the practitioner and possibly go in for another treatment or two right away to complete the process the first treatment began.

How often you come in for Reiki if you want continuing treatments is something you can discuss with your practitioner and may vary greatly from case to case, Advanced practitioners can also send remote treatments. The Reiki energy flows to where it is needed though the hands on placement will charge each area more quickly than hands off in many cases.
