Not having physical bodies for the most part fairies, like angels, take their form  from the minds of people. When they appear to humans they take on a form that  best serves their purpose. This unfamiliarity with physical form may account in part for  the reputation for shape shifting and "glamour" (illusion) the Fairies have.      They are capable of manifesting in physical form and taking part in a great many worldly activities.

     Some Fairy have been described as kind to children or actively involved with  guarding homes and keeping fires lit in the hearth and making the bread rise.
Many are known for loving to dance. These are the ones often seen dancing in the  fairy rings at the full moon. Many folk still keep a patch of wild thyme and magical herbs near a clearing or mossy Glen to provide a place for dancing fairies.
    Others Fairies have been described as unkind or cruel with dreams so far removed from  human understanding as to be beyond human comprehension to us. I believe that these difference are because of meetings with different kinds of beings generally classed as fairy. though the little green or gold or other colored balls of light we sometimes see in the garden may be the nearest to the true form of the nature spirits that most of us will ever shall see.

     Some of the fae are not at all involved or interested in people and others are very curious and inclined to help or thwart us. I was not going to relate the theory that they were called fairy because they were not at all fair but were powerful enough in older times for folks to be wary of how they were spoken of lest they hear and be offended, when I heard a small voice in my ear say " For just the same reason are you folk called human-kind ",  the voice trailed away laughing .   

     We may have much more chance than in the near past to find out about the fairy ourselves because the veil between worlds, realms, planes is said to be thinning again after a thousand years or so where little contact was possible we will again be sharing the land with these mysterious beings. So leave some cookies in the pantry if you have one ,or perhaps some milk in a cup near the door and a patch of sweet herbs and wildflowers in a far corner of your Garden and perhaps you will someday be gifted with a sprinkle of fairy dust to sweeten your dreams and hear the sound of fairy laughter on the wind
