Remote attunement works.  The energy accessed is just as effective as with more conventional training. There is   more effort required to obtain the training,  understanding and practice  when you are attuned remotely  than when you are attuned in person.    It is true that many people learn better from in person classes.  Some people also get more feeling of confidence from a longer apprentice type course of study.  When you accept a Reiki  attunement by whater ever means  it is your responsability to study and practice until you have the skills.   Anyone who intends to teach Reiki professionly should  either take a class or classes in person or  join Reiki circles to get a lot of hands on practice and exchange information with other practitioners.

 It is also reasonable for a teacher to receive a fair  return for the effort,  expertise and expense of presenting the classes in an easily understandable form.      That said, however, The whole Grand master thing seems just plain silly for the most part. Titles do not guarantee virtue. All the chest thumping put-downs and criticism of  remote attunement usually  stem from ignorence, ego or greed. 

      Paying for an expensive in person class does not ensure good training either ( I paid a lot for my first two  Master classes and got virtually  no  training other than two sheets of paper  one with the symbol and one with a simplified attunement method). ( I studied my butt off afterwardsand actively sought out further training.)    I have  also retrained a fair number of folks who'd done a long training and apprenticeship and were still uneasy about their actual ability to work with Reiki.

  A very few of  the "grand masters" almost seem to want worshipers rather than students.  Some Reiki  teachers sincerely believe that remote and free training and  attunements are less valuable  than training done in person and paid for.  Most of those who have been open enough to check out the effects of remotely attuned Reiki practitioners  have come to accept the validity these practices.
  I find that once an old style Reiki Master has had a sample treatment  from a remotely trained practitioner they  revise their opinion  and confirm the effectiveness  of  this method. However you are trained or attuned  it is up to each Reiki practitioner to learn the  practices  precepts and traditions of Reiki and to reifine their own skills.  Two of the most important things to know is to allow the Reiki to flow  naturally  and don't push down.
